One idea is to add hidden storage for items you do not want out in the open. The hidden storage is in the form of drawers and cabinets, so you can store a variety of items. You can add a drawer to the side of several bottom steps to create a unique but functional look. A few open shelves can be added to the mix for anything you would like to display.
If you’re not looking to hide any items, you may enjoy a cubed storage unit on the side of your staircase. It can be used to display books, collectibles and decorative pieces. The cubes are going to be in several sizes because they are on a staircase, but this is perfect for displaying different items. Even the smaller cubes near the top can be put to use with small canisters and plants.
You can get creative by turning your under-the-stairs storage into a pet area. Install one or two small shelves on the side for their bowls and toys. A separate, bigger area can house their pet bed, giving your pet their own place to relax. You can even place a light near the area to comfort them when it’s time to turn out the lights. Since you are using this spot for your four-legged friend, you want to make sure it is an open area.
Why not turn the open area under your staircase into a mini bar? You can install a small counter complete with several drawers and cabinets, as well as a small sink and faucet. Take it up a notch by placing a mini refrigerator next to the counter. If your basement is an entertainment area, your mini bar is going to be the perfect addition to your home.
If you have more space under your staircase than you know what to do with, consider turning it into a cozy nook. Use one or two high shelves for books or decorative pieces and place a single wall light on each side of the shelves. There should be enough space under the bottom shelf for a long window seat, which is complete with a throw blanket and soft pillows. You can even add a round table for function and an ottoman for additional seating.
Whether you are storing books and magazines, creating a spot for your pet or building a mini bar, using your staircase for storage is a functional way to maximize your space.
